Built to your measurements

A standard raised bed rarely fits a real garden. Alongside the standard sizes in our shop, we build made-to-measure planters, troughs and raised beds in our workshop at Wheldrake, just outside York, so we can cut a piece to your dimensions instead of asking you to work around ours.

Products available to buy online are stock items and are delivered within 3–5 business days from dispatch. Custom-size and bespoke products are supplied separately by quotation and are not available for direct online purchase.

Made to order — custom product

• These are made-to-order, custom products. Every made-to-measure planter, trough or raised bed is cut and built to your specification in our Wheldrake workshop. Nothing arranged through this page is a stock item.
• Production lead time. Your written quotation states the manufacturing lead time for your job, and you receive it before you pay anything. Bespoke lead times are longer than the 3–5 business days from dispatch that apply to standard stock sizes.
• You can cancel free of charge before production starts. Up until you approve the drawing and dimensions and we begin work, you can cancel at any time at no cost, and we refund anything you have paid in full.
• Change-of-mind returns do not apply once production has started. Because a bespoke piece is cut to your measurements and cannot be resold, made-to-order goods are exempt from the 14-day change-of-mind cancellation right once work has begun.
• Your consumer rights are unaffected. If a custom piece arrives faulty, damaged, incorrectly made or not as described, your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply in full and we will repair, replace or refund at our own cost. See faulty, damaged or incorrect items.

How it works

1. Tell us the space, not the product. Send your rough measurements, what the planter will stand on and what you want to grow, using the form below. Nothing has to be exact yet.
2. We come back with a written quotation. Within one working day, Monday to Friday. It sets out the price of the piece, carriage to your postcode and the manufacturing lead time for your job.
3. We confirm every dimension in writing before anything is cut, along with board thickness, bracing, feet, liner and finish. If a date you have asked for is not achievable, we will say so rather than let it slip.
4. You decide. A quotation is free, there is no obligation and nothing is charged until you have accepted it.
5. We build it and book the delivery. Made-to-measure pieces travel on a pallet or a two-person service. The carrier contacts you to arrange a slot and delivers kerbside or to the nearest safe hard standing.

Before you start

• Measurements in centimetres. Length, width or diameter, and height. Approximate is fine for now; we confirm every dimension in writing before anything is cut.
• Where it will stand. Paving, decking, gravel or open soil changes what we recommend for board thickness, bracing and feet.
• Your delivery postcode. Larger made-to-measure pieces travel on a pallet or a two-person service, so carriage is quoted per job rather than at the standard rate.

How long it takes

• Your quotation. We answer custom size enquiries within one working day, Monday to Friday. The quotation covers the price of the piece, carriage to your postcode and the manufacturing lead time for your job.
• Manufacturing. Every custom piece is cut and built to order in our Wheldrake workshop, so the lead time depends on the size of the job and how busy the workshop is. It is confirmed in writing in your quotation before you pay anything, and if a date you have given us is not achievable we will say so rather than let it slip.
• Delivery. Larger made-to-measure pieces travel on a pallet or a two-person service. The carrier contacts you to arrange a slot and delivers to the kerbside or nearest safe hard standing, so please check vehicle access. Items bought from the shop as standard sizes are dispatched separately and normally arrive within 3 to 5 working days.

Paying, and your cancellation rights

• A quotation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Nothing is charged until you have accepted the written quotation.
• You can cancel free of charge before production starts. Once you have accepted the quotation but before we begin cutting, you can still cancel at no cost and we will refund any payment in full. We will always tell you when work is about to start.
• Made-to-measure goods are exempt from the 14-day change-of-mind cancellation right. Because a bespoke piece is cut to your specification it cannot be resold, so once you have approved the drawing and dimensions and we have started work, the order cannot be cancelled for a change of mind. Please read the confirmation carefully before you approve it.
• Your rights if something is wrong are unaffected. If a bespoke piece arrives faulty, damaged or not as described, we repair, replace or refund at our own cost, exactly as we would for a standard product. See faulty, damaged or incorrect items and our returns and refund policy.
