Wooden Planters Versus Plastic Planters
We make timber planters, so we are not a neutral party. What follows is an honest account of where each material genuinely wins, so you can decide which trade-offs you are happy with.
Where plastic wins
- Weight. A large plastic planter can be moved by one person even when planted. A 200 litre timber raised bed cannot.
- Price at the low end. Injection-moulded pots are cheaper than anything cut and assembled by hand.
- Water retention. Non-porous walls lose less moisture, which matters on a hot, exposed balcony.
- It will not rot. Plastic does not care how wet it gets.
- Consistency. Every unit looks identical, with no knots, grain variation or colour change.
Where timber wins
- Root temperature. Thick timber walls insulate. Compost in a wooden planter warms more slowly in spring and, more usefully, does not cook in a July heatwave the way a thin dark plastic pot does. Roots against a sun-baked plastic wall take real damage.
- Rigidity at size. Above about 100 litres, plastic bows outwards under the weight of wet compost unless the wall is very thick. A braced timber frame holds its shape.
- Repairability. A split board can be replaced with a screwdriver. A cracked plastic planter is finished.
- UV life. Plastic left outdoors goes chalky and brittle, typically somewhere between five and ten years depending on the grade and how much sun it gets. Pressure-treated timber weathers rather than degrades.
- End of life. Untreated timber offcuts can be composted or burnt; treated timber goes to a licensed waste facility. Neither is perfect, but plastic planters overwhelmingly end up in landfill because mixed garden plastics are rarely accepted by kerbside recycling.
- Appearance as it ages. This one is subjective. Timber silvers. Plastic fades. Most people find the first more attractive than the second.
The honest disadvantages of timber
We would rather tell you these than have you discover them:
- It is heavy. Plan where it goes before you fill it.
- It moves. Surface cracks and small gaps between slats appear within the first year. That is normal behaviour for solid wood, not a defect.
- The colour changes. Honey to silver-grey over a season or two, unless you oil it.
- It needs somewhere to drain. Timber sitting permanently in standing water will eventually rot, however well treated it is.
- It costs more than a plastic equivalent of the same volume.
What about composite and metal
Wood-plastic composite avoids rot and holds its colour, but it is heavy, expensive, cannot easily be repaired and is very difficult to recycle. Corten and galvanised steel look excellent and last a long time, but metal conducts heat, so root temperature swings are the widest of any material.
A reasonable rule of thumb
For small, movable pots that get shuffled around or brought under cover, plastic is a sensible choice. For anything that is going to stay put, hold a decent volume of compost and be looked at for years, timber earns its extra cost. That is particularly true for vegetables, where root temperature and soil volume have a direct effect on what you harvest.
