Hand-built in our Wheldrake workshop on the edge of York, the Simply Wood Hexagonal Garden Planter is a six-sided raised bed cut from solid pressure-treated softwood. Each of the six faces is made up of 19 mm slats stacked to a finished height of 30 cm, giving roots real depth while keeping the profile low enough to sit neatly beside a patio door, a gravel path or the edge of a lawn.

The planter measures 60 cm across its widest point and holds roughly 55 litres of compost. Every corner is drawn together with countersunk stainless steel screws and backed by an internal batten, so the frame stays square even when the soil is fully saturated after a week of rain. The timber is vacuum pressure treated for above-ground outdoor use, which guards against rot and insect damage without the need for annual repainting.

A permeable liner is fitted inside before dispatch. It slows moisture loss in summer and stops compost washing out through the slat joints, while the open base lets surplus water drain away freely on to gravel, paving or turf. Short feet lift the frame about 15 mm clear of the ground so the lowest slat never sits in standing water.

The planter arrives fully assembled and ready to fill. It suits bedding plants, kitchen herbs, cut-and-come-again salad leaves, alpines, dwarf shrubs and spring bulbs. Left alone, the natural timber weathers to a soft silver-grey over a season or two; a coat of exterior wood stain will hold the fresh honey tone or match it to existing garden joinery.

Care

Brush out fallen leaves and debris each autumn, and lift the planter clear of standing water over winter where you can. Re-coat with an exterior wood oil or stain every two to three years if you prefer to keep a darker, freshly finished tone. Do not seal the open base, as free drainage is what keeps the timber sound.
